Why a single source of truth matters

What it gives the buyer

Ask what the single most important feature of an environmental registry is and the answer is boring and absolute: a reduction can be claimed exactly once.

Everything else — measurement, allocation, custody — is undermined the moment two parties can claim the same tonne. Double-counting is the cardinal sin, and the registry exists mostly to make it impossible.

Every certificate carries one unique ID and one lifecycle. It can be issued, transferred, transformed, and settled — but it can be retired only once, and retirement is terminal. After a certificate is retired against a claim, it is spent. It cannot re-enter another inventory, be resold, or back a second claim.

This is deliberately unglamorous. There is no clever cryptography being sold here — just a strict rule, enforced in one place, that a lifecycle ends exactly once. The value is in the enforcement, not the novelty.

Single-use only works if there is one place that knows the state of every certificate. If custody lived in scattered spreadsheets, nothing would stop the same reduction from being retired twice in two systems. A single registry is what turns ‘claimed once’ from a policy into a guarantee — the same reason commodity markets rely on central clearing.
